Context of Liberal Education
Scientific and technological innovations, global interdependence, cross-cultural encounters, specialization and the increased focus on education’s utility are rapidly reshaping the world. More than ever, students are being called upon to exhibit broad knowledge, capabilities and perspectives so they can adapt to the workplace and realize their role as global citizens. To do justice to the multifaceted challenges, educators need to create a love for life-long learning, a passion for civic engagement, a sense of responsibility to the public sphere, a thinking that transcends the simple movement from a degree to a job, and prepare empathetic citizens who are actively involved in the realization of democracy.
Liberal education’s emphasis on STEAM subjects prepares students not only for their immediate careers, but for a life of learning where they are hopefully able to comprehend the implications and consequences of individual and social choices. If liberal education is the kind of learning needed to sustain a free society, a society free from prejudice and partisanship, then the full import of such an education takes us beyond the instrumental, the personal and utilitarian goals and with these thoughts in mind we would like to invite participants to share their views. |
